Construction of the reservoir, Manvers Main Colliery, Wath upon Dearne, South Yorkshire, 1955

Construction of the reservoir, Manvers Main Colliery, Wath upon Dearne, South Yorkshire, 1955. A Priestman tracked crane at work during the construction of the reservoir at the colliery, near Rotherham. Priestman Brothers were based in Hull. The company was founded in 1870 by William Dent Priestman. The company began the manufacture of construction equipment in 1876 when they were asked to construct machinery to recover lost gold from the sea off the west coast of Spain. No gold was found but the companys equipment proved useful for dredging of harbours and docks. After many acquisitions, the company eventually merged with Coles Cranes of Sunderland, and began building offshore cranes for North Sea oil rig platforms. The company now trades in Bradford under its new owner, Gardner Denver, an American based compressor and blower manufacturer. What is left of Priestman no longer manufactures cranes or excavators

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Manvers Main Colliery, located in Wath upon Dearne, South Yorkshire. Taken in 1955, it showcases the construction of a reservoir at the colliery with remarkable precision. In the foreground stands a Priestman tracked crane, an impressive piece of machinery that played a crucial role during this project. Priestman Brothers, based in Hull and founded by William Dent Priestman in 1870, initially specialized in manufacturing equipment for recovering lost gold from the sea. Although their search for gold proved fruitless off Spain's west coast, their machinery found purposeful application in dredging harbors and docks. Over time, through various acquisitions and mergers - including one with Coles Cranes of Sunderland - Priestman expanded its operations to include offshore cranes for North Sea oil rig platforms. However, today under new ownership by Gardner Denver (an American compressor and blower manufacturer), what remains of Priestman no longer produces cranes or excavators. Nevertheless, this photograph serves as a testament to both Manvers Main Colliery's historical significance within the coal mining industry and to Priestman Brothers' legacy as pioneers of innovative construction equipment. It is an evocative snapshot frozen in time that allows us to appreciate the dedication and craftsmanship involved in shaping our industrial past.
