Doncaster Races - the Dead-Heat for the St. Leger Stakes... 1850. Creator: Unknown

Doncaster Races - the Dead-Heat for the St. Leger Stakes, between "Voltigeur" and "Russborough" - "Bolingbroke" third, 1850. Voltigeur, the winner of the Derby, and whose triumph upon the great northern course was looked forward to as a "dead certainty, " and upon whom 6 to 4 was freely offered...was run to a level nose by Russborough, an Irish horse, hitherto unknown to fame...During the final struggle the whole compact mass heaved...with agitation; and the huge...roar of many lusty voices - "Voltigeur wins!" - "Russborough wins!"...There are many - sage men, and of authority - who maintain that there is no such thing as a dead heat - that one horse's nose must be, if even a hair's breadth, a little more forward than the other's. Very possible: but...who is to decide upon so nice a shade of a shaving of a difference?...To the book-maker the occurrence...is perplexing in the extreme. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the thrilling moment of the dead-heat finish between Voltigeur and Russborough in the 1850 St. Leger Stakes at Doncaster Races. Voltigeur, the favorite and winner of the Derby, is seen locked in a fierce battle with the unknown Irish horse, Russborough. The intense excitement of the crowd is palpable as they strain to determine the victor, with some spectators jumping up and down and others leaning forward in anticipation. The caption from the Illustrated London News of the time describes the scene, noting the agitation of the crowd and the confusion for the bookmakers as they struggled to determine the winner based on such a minute difference. The debate over whether a dead heat truly exists and how to determine the winner in such a situation continues to this day. This photograph is a testament to the unpredictability and excitement of horse racing, even in the 19th century.
