Dr. Hawtrey, the late Provost of Eton College, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Dr. Hawtrey, the late Provost of Eton College, 1862. Edward Craven Hawtrey attended the College as a boy from 1799, starting out as an Oppidan and then later becoming a King's Scholar in 1803. In 1814, he returned to the school as Assistant Master and twenty years later became the Head Master. During this time he oversaw a number of changes at Eton including the introduction of Mathematics. He oversaw the installation of a sanatorium for infectious fevers and was able to do so through increasing the school fees with the support of parents. He also saw the erection of the school library and closed the Old Christopher Inn, previously a popular drinking spot for the boys. He was also keen to solve the problem of boys wasting their parent's money on goods sold by tradesmen travelling through Eton. He expressed in a circular from 1835 that it was nearly impossible to control the Tradesmen and that instead the payment of the boys Bills were to fall to the students themselves instead of their parents in an attempt to make them more wary of how they spent their money...In 1853 he eventually became Provost and the next year he became vicar of Mapledurham, both positions he held until his death in 1862. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of the late Dr. Edward Craven Hawtrey, who served as the Provost of Eton College from 1853 until his passing in 1862. A former student of Eton College himself, Hawtrey initially attended the institution as an Oppidan in 1799, later becoming a King's Scholar in 1803. His dedication to Eton College continued well into his adult years, as he returned to the school in 1814 as an Assistant Master. Two decades later, in 1834, he was appointed Head Master, where he implemented numerous significant changes. During his tenure as Head Master, Hawtrey introduced Mathematics to the curriculum, overseeing its implementation and ensuring its integration into the academic program. He also spearheaded the construction of a sanatorium for infectious fevers, a crucial development that improved the health and wellbeing of the students. To fund this project, Hawtrey increased the school fees with the support of parents, demonstrating his commitment to the welfare of the students. In an effort to address the issue of boys wasting their parents' money on goods sold by traveling tradesmen, Hawtrey issued a circular in 1835, stating that "it is nearly impossible to control the Tradesmen" and that the boys would now be responsible for paying their own bills instead of their parents. This bold move aimed to instill a sense of financial responsibility and frugality in the students. In 1853, Hawtrey was appointed Provost of Eton College and, the following year, became the Vicar of Mapledurham. He held both positions until his death in 1862. This portrait, published in the Illustrated London News in 1862, serves as a testament to Hawtrey's dedicated service and lasting impact on Eton College.
