The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park - the Sash-Bar Finishing Machine, 1850. Creator: Unknown

The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park - the Sash-Bar Finishing Machine, 1850. As in every other part of the works the utmost skill is displayed with regard to economising power, so in the disposition of the machinery in connexion with the steam-power employed...considerable ingenuity is visible throughout. The engine, calculated at eight horse-power (equal to the collective force of forty-four men), is on the locomotive principle, working with steam at a pressure of 60 lb. to the square inch...From the fly-wheel on the north side of the engine a gutta-percha band of two inches in width passes round the driving-pulley of a circular saw of ten inches diameter, which projects sufficiently above the level of the bench, in a slot of which it is fixed in proper bearings, to cut out wooden fillets and other portions of wood-work, either from planks or scantling timber, as may, from time to time, be required. Three men are required for this'particular service: the first is the carrier of the materials to and from the bench or table; the second places and adjusts them on the bench close to the saw, and also attends to the bands, &c.; and the third removes them from the table when cut'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph from the annals of history transports us back to The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park, London, during the year 1850. The image showcases the Sash-Bar Finishing Machine, a marvel of engineering innovation that left spectators in awe. The creator of this photograph remains unknown, but the intricacies of the machine are detailed in an article from the Illustrated London News of the time. The Sash-Bar Finishing Machine, a testament to the ingenuity of the Victorian era, was designed to economize power and save labor. The engine, with a calculated power of eight horsepower, was on the locomotive principle and operated with steam at a pressure of 60 lb. per square inch. This collective force was equivalent to forty-four men. The fly-wheel on the north side of the engine drove a gutta-percha band of two inches in width, which passed around the driving-pulley of a circular saw of ten inches in diameter. This saw, fixed in proper bearings, could cut out wooden fillets and other portions of woodwork from planks or scantling timber as needed. Three men were required to operate this part of the machine: one carried materials to and from the bench, another placed and adjusted them on the bench and attended to the bands, and the third removed the finished pieces from the table. The Great Exhibition, held from May to October 1851, showcased over 100,000 exhibits from fifteen countries, and the Sash-Bar Finishing Machine was just one of the many marvels that captured the imagination of the public. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a fascinating insight into the industrial revolution and the technological advancements of the time.
