Hampton Court Palace, 1951. Creator: Shirley Markham

Hampton Court Palace, 1951. Hampton Court, former royal palace in Richmond upon Thames, London. Started by Cardinal Wolsey in 1514, the Palace passed to King Heny VIII in 1529 when Wolsey fell from favour. It was extensively altered by Henry. The last monarch to use the Palace was George II. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of Hampton Court Palace in 1951. The creator, Shirley Markham, was a talented artist whose work remained hidden for many years. Hampton Court Palace, located in Richmond upon Thames, London, has a rich history dating back to its beginnings under Cardinal Wolsey in 1514. It later became the residence of King Henry VIII after Wolsey's fall from favor. Markham's artistic style was influenced by renowned British illustrators such as Mervyn Peake, Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Her studies at the Central School of Art in London shaped her skills in graphic design and illustration during the early 1950s. Although Markham had a promising career ahead of her as a graphic designer and illustrator, societal expectations prevailed when she married in 1957. Middle-class women during that era were expected to prioritize homemaking and raising children over their professional aspirations. For decades, Markham's portfolio remained tucked away in her family's attic until now. This publication marks the first time her remarkable artwork is being shared with the world. Through this stunning photograph of Hampton Court Palace taken by Shirley Markham herself, we are transported back to an era where artistry flourished amidst societal constraints. It serves as a testament to both Markham's talent and resilience while shedding light on an important chapter in women's history within creative fields.
