Hays Wharf, Thames, c1951. Creator: Shirley Markham
Hays Wharf, Thames, c1951. Cranes on the south bank of the River Thames in London, used to unload goods. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print of Hays Wharf, Thames, c1951 transports us back to a bustling era in London's history. The cranes on the south bank of the River Thames stand tall and proud, ready to unload goods from ships that sailed into this vibrant port. Shirley Markham, the talented creator behind this image, was a student of Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London during the early 1950s. Under the guidance of renowned artist Mervyn Peake and inspired by British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone and Quentin Blake, Markham developed her unique style of drawing. Her passion for art took her beyond borders as she explored Italy's Dolomite Mountains and sketched classical buildings in Rome. After graduating from Central School, Markham embarked on a successful career as a graphic designer. Her illustrations adorned books, comics' cartoons came alive under her penmanship while menus and programs were infused with her creative touch. However, societal expectations prevailed when she married in 1957; middle-class women were expected to prioritize family life over their careers. Sadly, despite her undeniable talent, Markham lacked confidence to return to illustration after leaving it behind. For years, her portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic until now when we have the privilege to witness these previously unpublished works for the first time. Let us celebrate Shirley Markham's artistic legacy captured forever within this remarkable photograph print.
