Hotel and Hydropathic Establishment about to be erected at Upper Norwood, [South London], 1862. The site...is within a few minutes walk of the main entrance of the Crystal Palace, and is one of the most charming in that beautiful locality, commanding extensive and uninterrupted views over the Surrey hills...The accommodation will comprise public drawing and dining rooms, library, billiard-rooms, hot and cold baths, and about 100 sleeping apartments. Arrangements have been made to set apart one of the wings of the hotel for the distinct accommodation of visitors seeking a beneficial change of air and scene with the quietude of a country residence. This department will also comprise all the accessories of a hydropathic establishment, with Turkish baths, &c...The modem conveniences of hoists for luggage, electric bell apparatus, and speaking tubes have also been adopted in the designs. The building [a project of the Upper Norwood Hotel Company (Limited)] has been designed by Mr. John Whichcord, F.S.A. of Walbrook, under whose supervision it will be erected'.
