EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 9th century lintel, hailing from the Kota region of Rajasthan, India, showcases the intricately carved image of Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and regeneration, surrounded by his subsidiary deities. The lintel, made of red sandstone, is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of the artisans of the time. Shiva is depicted in a seated position, with four arms, each holding a symbolic object. In his primary right hand, he holds a trident, signifying his role as the god of destruction. In his upper left hand, he holds a drum, representing creation, while in his lower left hand, he holds a serpent, symbolizing the cycle of life and death. In his fourth hand, he holds an axe, symbolizing the destruction of ignorance. Nandi, Shiva's sacred bull, is depicted on the left side of the lintel, facing Shiva, as is traditional in Hindu iconography. Various other deities are also depicted on the lintel, including Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom and good fortune, and Parvati, Shiva's consort. The lintel is a prime example of the ornate and decorative arts that flourished in India during the 9th century. The intricate carvings on the lintel demonstrate the skill and creativity of the artisans of the time, as they brought the Hindu deities to life through their art. The lintel is now on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), providing a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Hinduism in South East Asia.
