EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the distinguished presence of Lord Strathcona, a prominent Scottish-Canadian businessman and philanthropist. Taken around 1900 and featured in "Bibbys Annual 1914", this portrait showcases Donald Alexander Smith, the 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal. Known as one of the British Empire's foremost builders, Lord Strathcona played significant roles in various industries. As commissioner, governor, and principal shareholder of the Hudsons Bay Company, he left an indelible mark on Canada's history. Additionally, he served as president of the Bank of Montreal and co-founded the Canadian Pacific Railway – two pivotal institutions that shaped Canada's economic growth during that era. Lord Strathcona was not only a successful businessman but also actively engaged in politics. He represented Montreal in the House of Commons of Canada and later became Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. His influence extended beyond his home country; he held positions such as chairman of Burmah Oil and the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. Furthermore, Lord Strathcona contributed significantly to education as chancellor of McGill University and Aberdeen University. This photograph reflects his Victorian-era style with a well-groomed beard befitting a statesman. The image is captured by Mills for J. Bibby & Sons' publication "Bibbys Annual" edited by Joseph Bibby himself. It serves as a testament to Lord Strathcona's legacy – an embodiment of ambition, success, philanthropy, political acumen, business leadership within both Britain and Canada during his time.
