EDITORS COMMENTS
Mrs. Rheta C. Dorr, a pioneering American journalist, writer, and political activist, is depicted in this striking photograph from the Harris & Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress. Dressed in a corduroy coat and dress with a cord waist, Dorr holds the first edition of "The Suffragist," a newspaper she edited for the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage. The publication, which began in 1913, was a powerful tool in the fight for women's suffrage in the United States. Dorr's glasses perch on the bridge of her nose, adding an intellectual air to her image. The first edition of "The Suffragist" is open on a table beside her, its pages filled with headlines and articles advocating for women's rights. Dorr's determination and commitment to the cause are palpable in this photograph, making it an important document of the suffrage movement in American history." "Born as Rheta Childe Dorr, she later married George H. Dorr and took on the name Rheta C. Dorr. Her journalistic career began in the late 1800s, and she went on to write for various publications, including McClure's Magazine and The New Republic. However, it was her work as the editor of "The Suffragist" that solidified her place in history. Dorr's tenure as editor lasted from 1913 to 1914, during which time she used the newspaper to mobilize support for the suffrage cause and to challenge the patriarchal norms of the time. Her activism extended beyond her writing, as she also participated in protests and rallies, including the famous 1913 Women's Suffrage Parade in Washington, D.C. This photograph captures a moment in time when Dorr, a trailblazing journalist and activist, was at the forefront of the fight for women's suffrage in America.
