National Concerts at Her Majesty's Theatre - the Berlin Choir, 1850. Creator: Smyth

National Concerts at Her Majesty's Theatre [London] - the Berlin Choir, 1850. The pure and excellent quality of the voices, the classical excellence of the style, the marvellous precision in taking up the points, the perfect intonation, the exactitude of the time, the beautiful blending of the whole in the swelling and diminishing of the gorgeous harmonies, quite electrified the auditory...The Choir consists of seventy voices in Berlin. It is sustained at the sole expense of the King of Prussia. The boys who are admitted in the choir are instructed in composition, or they may select an instrument for practice, in order, if their voices should be lost, that a resource may be open for their subsistence...The Choir...sing a capella - that is, without any instrumental accompaniment'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled "National Concerts at Her Majesty's Theatre - the Berlin Choir, 1850," by Smyth, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural history of 19th-century music and theatre. The image showcases the Berlin Choir in full regalia, with their focused expressions and raised batons, ready to deliver an a cappella performance. The choir, consisting of seventy voices, was renowned for its 'pure and excellent quality of voices,' 'classical excellence of style,' and 'marvellous precision' in their performances. The choir was a significant institution in Germany, sustained solely by the King of Prussia. Boys who were admitted into the choir received an education in composition or were allowed to practice an instrument, providing a fallback option if their voices were lost. The choir's repertoire consisted solely of a cappella music, meaning they sang without any instrumental accompaniment. The photograph print was published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, providing a visual representation of the electrifying performances that captivated audiences. The choirmaster, Augustus Neithardt, stands at the front, conducting the choir with precision and control. The image, with its engraved detail, transports us back to a time when the theatre was a primary source of entertainment and artistic expression. This photograph print is a testament to the enduring power of music and the arts, and the dedication of those who pursued them in the 19th century. It is a reminder of the important role that choirs played in shaping the cultural landscape of Europe and beyond.
