EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pair of light cream gloves with an exquisite openwork design, originating from Maes Millinery Shop. Crafted between 1941 and 1994, these cotton knit gloves feature a delicate lattice pattern on the back of the hands, adding an elegant touch to any outfit. The seams along the exterior side of the palm and fingers are intentionally left raw, giving them a unique and artisanal feel. Notably, the left glove bears a manufacturer's label sewn into the seam that reads "Van Raalte" in beautiful blue embroidery. Meanwhile, the right glove surprises us with printed text on its interior palm stating "ALL COTTON / EXCLUSIVE / OF ORNAMENTATION / SEWN IN PHILIPPINES". This intriguing detail adds to their cultural heritage and reveals their origin. Mae Reeves (1912-2016), an African-American milliner renowned for her custom-made hats, owned Maes Millinery Shop in downtown Philadelphia. As one of the first shops owned by an African American woman in the city, it held great significance within both fashion and cultural history. Preserved at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this object represents not only fashion but also resilience and entrepreneurship within black communities during mid-20th century America. It serves as a testament to Mae Reeves' pioneering spirit while highlighting her contribution to heritage art. This print transports us back in time to witness not just a pair of gloves but also a piece of history that celebrates diversity and creativity within our country's rich tapestry.
