EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Peveril Castle, located in the picturesque town of Castleton, Derbyshire. Built by William Peverel, an alleged illegitimate son of William the Conqueror, this fortress stands as a testament to its rich history. After being granted lands in the Peak District following the Norman Conquest, Peveril constructed this formidable castle. However, turbulent times befell the Peverel family when King Henry II confiscated both the castle and its surrounding estates in 1155. This unfortunate event occurred due to William's son, known as William the Younger, falling out of favor with the king. The significance of this remarkable structure is further highlighted by its appearance in Sir Walter Scott's renowned novel "Peveril of the Peak". The photo itself captures not only the architectural brilliance but also highlights nature's beauty surrounding it. Set against a backdrop of lush greenery and blooming trees during springtime, one can truly appreciate how seamlessly this medieval stronghold blends into its natural environment. With its imposing ruins and strategic location within a national park -the Peak District- Peveril Castle serves as a reminder of England's past defenses and fortifications. This image captured by Peter Thompson perfectly encapsulates both historical grandeur and natural splendor that make Peveril Castle an iconic landmark worth preserving for generations to come.
