The Prince of Wales Visit to Egypt: the Sphinx at Djizeh and the recent excavations around... 1862 Creator: Unknown

The Prince of Wales Visit to Egypt: the Sphinx at Djizeh and the recent excavations around it - from a drawing by Frank Dillon, 1862. The future King Edward VII in Africa. The Egyptian sphinxes are lions without wings...The largest of the existing sphinxes is that of Djizeh...which is hewn cut of the rock, and is of the enormous dimensions of 143ft. in length and 62ft. in height in front. The greater part of it is covered with sand, above which little more than the head and shoulders are visible. Some excavations of an extensive character are, however, in operation, as shown in our Engraving...The sun had just set when the Prince and his party came into full sight of that memorable view. They had just time to survey the colossal features of the Sphinx and the general outline of the Pyramids by the fading light...they were roused by early dawn to make the ascent of the Great Pyramid before sunrise. The Prince, who was the earliest of the party, excited the astonishment of the Bedouins by climbing to the summit without assistance, a feat which, as all who have tried it are well aware, is anything but a light one'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, dating back to 1862, depicts a historic moment during the Prince of Wales' visit to Egypt. The future King Edward VII is shown in the foreground, gazing in awe at the enigmatic Sphinx of Djizeh, with the Pyramids of Giza faintly visible in the background. The Sphinx, hewn from the rock, measures an impressive 143ft. in length and 62ft. in height at the front, making it the largest known sphinx in Egypt. However, the majority of this colossal structure is buried under sand, leaving only the head and shoulders visible. At the time of the Prince's visit, extensive excavations were underway around the Sphinx, as evidenced by the workers and machinery visible in the print. The sun had just set when the Prince and his party arrived at the site, allowing them a brief but memorable view of the Sphinx and the Pyramids before retiring for the night. The following morning, they rose early to ascend the Great Pyramid before sunrise, with the Prince making headlines by reaching the summit without assistance, a remarkable feat that left the local Bedouins in astonishment. This photograph print, from a drawing by Frank Dillon, offers a unique glimpse into the Prince of Wales' historic visit to Egypt and the ongoing archaeological efforts to uncover the mysteries of the ancient world.
