EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 9th century red sandstone carving depicts the Seven Mother Goddesses, also known as the Matrikas, flanked by Shiva-Virabhadra and Ganesha. The Matrikas, represented as the embodiment of divine motherly love and protection, are shown in various dancing poses, each holding a symbolic object. Shiva-Virabhadra, the destructive form of Shiva, stands on the left, his third eye blazing and his right hand raised in a blessing gesture. On the right stands Ganesha, the elephant-headed god, who is considered the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom. The intricate carving showcases the masterful craftsmanship of the artisans of the time, with each figure displaying a unique expression and pose. This beautiful and intricately hand-carved frieze is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of India and South East Asia, and a reminder of the deep-rooted religious traditions that continue to shape the region. Originating from Hindustan, this artwork is now part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's collection and is a must-see for anyone interested in Asian art and culture.
