The Siege of Sebastopol - Valley of Inkerman, 1854. Creator: Unknown

The Siege of Sebastopol - Valley of Inkerman, 1854. Crimean War. Landscape around the besieged Black Sea port, showing: English Sentries; Ruins of Inkerman; Cossack Field Guns; River Inkerman...The Valley of Inkerman commences at the inmost extremity of the harbour of Sebastopol, and the river Inkerman runs through it. The Valley, where the Sketch was taken, was not more than 700 yards wide; some of our cavalry, having gone down to a farm-house, where there were some stacks of hay (which, by-the-by, is getting scarce), were suddenly fired upon by four field-guns, which the Russian Cossack Artillery had left masked behind the walls of the ruins. Fortunately, our men had taken most of the hay before the guns commenced firing; so they got off with a good share of the spoil before the Russians could do them any damage'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the Valley of Inkerman during the Siege of Sebastopol in 1854, a significant event during the Crimean War. The image, taken from an engraving published in the Illustrated London News, showcases the landscape around the besieged Black Sea port. In the foreground, English sentries stand guard, while the ruins of Inkerman and Cossack field guns are visible in the background. The Valley of Inkerman, located at the inmost extremity of Sebastopol's harbor, is a narrow geographical feature no more than 700 yards wide. The river Inkerman runs through it, and this particular sketch was taken in the valley where the Sketch was taken. The scene was the site of a surprising encounter between British cavalry and Russian Cossack artillery. Our cavalry had gone down to a farmhouse to gather hay, but were ambushed by four field guns that the Russian Cossacks had left masked behind the walls of the ruins. Fortunately, the British cavalry had taken most of the hay before the guns began firing, allowing them to escape with a good portion of their spoils. The Crimean War, which lasted from 1853 to 1856, was a disputed territory between Russia and the Western European powers, with the ultimate goal of protecting the Ottoman Empire from Russian expansion. This print, from the collection of The Print Collector, provides a glimpse into this pivotal moment in history and the strategic importance of the Valley of Inkerman during the Siege of Sebastopol.
