St. John's, Deptford, New Schools, Upper Lewisham Road, 1856. Creator: Unknown

St. John's, Deptford, New Schools, Upper Lewisham Road, 1856. By the munificent gift of £10, 000, placed at the disposal of Archdeacon Sinclair, by Miss Courts, a noble church has been erected [in Lewisham, now part of London]...A temporary school-room, which had been opened at the beginning of last year, was immediately filled to overflowing...The schools - which are singularly beautiful in outline, and the internal arrangements admirably adapted for the purposes of education for 200 boys, 170 girls, and 200 infants, with residences - have been built by Messrs. Thompson, from the designs of Mr. Joseph Peacock...The committee have still a considerable sum to raise to complete the whole; and, as the greater portion of the district is inhabited by poor, and is densely populated, it is their anxious desire to perfect the whole establishment, for which there is so great need'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts St. John's New Schools, located at Upper Lewisham Road in Deptford, London, in the year 1856. The construction of this magnificent church and school complex was made possible by the generous donation of £10,000 from Miss Courts to Archdeacon Sinclair. The temporary schoolroom, which had been established the previous year, was quickly filled beyond capacity, necessitating the urgent need for a larger and more comprehensive educational facility. Designed by Mr. Joseph Peacock and built by Messrs. Thompson, the schools were a sight to behold, with their beautiful architectural outlines and internal arrangements specifically tailored to accommodate 200 boys, 170 girls, and 200 infants, in addition to residences. The committee overseeing the project still had a considerable sum to raise to complete the entire establishment, reflecting their deep commitment to providing a much-needed educational resource for the densely populated and predominantly poor district. The schools, as described in the Illustrated London News in 1856, were a testament to the power of philanthropy and the importance of education in improving the lives of those in need. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing a moment in time when community spirit and generosity came together to create a brighter future for the children of Deptford.
