EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in American naval history, as the U.S.S. Memphis, a damaged and sickened vessel, is brought home by the U.S. Hospital Ship Solace in 1916. The Memphis had met its fate in the Santo Domingo harbor, sunk by "enormous seas" that claimed the lives of all but six of her crew. In this image, a tug named Tecumseh carefully navigates the waters, towing the battered warship and its surviving sailors back to the safety and care of their own shores. The sailors, visibly weary and injured, cling to the railings of the Memphis, their faces etched with relief and gratitude for the respite that awaits them. This poignant scene is a testament to the courage and resilience of those who served in the United States Navy during this era, and the vital role that medical and transport vessels played in the welfare of sailors and the outcome of naval battles." "The photograph was taken by Harris & Ewing, a renowned photographic studio based in Washington D.C. at the time, and is part of their extensive collection held at the Library of Congress. The studio, founded by George H. Harris and Martha Ewing Kuntze, was known for its high-quality glass negatives and its coverage of significant events in American history. This image, with its powerful narrative and historical significance, is a testament to their commitment to documenting the nation's past.
