EDITORS COMMENTS
This 20th century print depicts a scene from the Vessantara Jataka, specifically Chapter 5, known as Jujaka. The image portrays the old, impoverished brahmin Jujaka and his young, beautiful wife Amittatapana. Amidst the lush greenery and traditional Siamese houses on stilts, Amittatapana is shown being teased by village women as she fetches water. The women mock her for being married to an old man, causing her to plead with Jujaka to ask Vessantara for his children to come and help with the household chores. Threatening to leave her husband if her wish is not granted, Amittatapana returns to Jujaka, who is depicted twice in the print - once sitting in their small, humble dwelling and receiving the water from his wife. The vibrant colors and intricate details of the textiles and buildings add to the richness of this Southeast Asian heritage art piece. The scene encapsulates the daily life and challenges of a traditional marriage, as well as the cultural and religious practices of the Theravada Buddhist community in Southeast Asia during the 1920s and 1930s.
