EDITORS COMMENTS
The Youngers, American outlaws, c1868-1876 (1954) In this print from 1954, we are introduced to the infamous Younger brothers - Bob, Rhetta, James, and Cole. These four individuals were an integral part of the notorious James-Younger gang that wreaked havoc across the American West between 1869 and 1876. Alongside Jesse and Frank James, they fearlessly robbed banks, stagecoaches, and trains. Tragically, their criminal pursuits came at a great cost. John Younger lost his life in a fierce gunfight with Pinkerton agents in 1874. The remaining three siblings faced their own share of hardships when they were wounded and captured by a determined posse after robbing a bank in Northfield, Minnesota on September 7th, 1876. To avoid facing the gallows for their crimes against society's norms at that time period; all three surviving Youngers pleaded guilty during their trial resulting in life imprisonment sentences rather than death penalties. This remarkable family portrait provides us with a glimpse into the lives of these outlaws who challenged authority and defied societal expectations during one of America's most tumultuous eras. It serves as a testament to both the allure and consequences of living on the edge within an untamed land known as 'The Wild West. '
