Sir Horace Jones HJP01_01_001

TOWER BRIDGE, TOWER HAMLETS, GREATER LONDON. A portrait of Sir Horace Jones seated beside the foundation stone of Tower Bridge.
Sir Horace Jones (1819-1887) was the architect of Tower Bridge, which he designed in collaboration with the civil engineer John Wolfe Barry. This cabinet card shows him seated, stick in hand, beside the bridges foundation stone around which it is possible to see the block and tackle used to manoeuvre the stone into its resting place on the south side of the Thames. The photograph was presumably taken in a temporary marquee erected to house the stone prior to it being laid by Albert Edward, Prince of Wales in June 1886. Sir Horace died the following year and the bridge was completed posthumously. Tower Bridge officially opened on the 30th June 1894

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed architect Sir Horace Jones seated beside the foundation stone of Tower Bridge, a true icon of London's skyline. Designed in collaboration with civil engineer John Wolfe Barry, Sir Horace Jones dedicated his expertise to creating this magnificent bascule and suspension bridge. In this cabinet card, we see Sir Horace seated confidently with a stick in hand, symbolizing his authority and vision for the project. The photograph offers a glimpse into the meticulous process of laying the foundation stone on the south side of the Thames. The block and tackle used to maneuver this significant piece into place can be seen surrounding him. Presumably taken within a temporary marquee constructed specifically for housing the stone before its grand unveiling by Albert Edward, Prince of Wales in June 1886, this image holds great historical significance. Tragically, Sir Horace passed away shortly after capturing this momentous event on film. However, his legacy lives on as Tower Bridge was completed posthumously and officially opened its majestic gates on June 30th, 1894. This remarkable photograph is brought to us by London Stereoscopic Company Limited from Historic England's collection. It serves as an enduring tribute not only to Sir Horace Jones but also to an era defined by Victorian architectural marvels that continue to inspire awe today.
