EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative reconstruction drawing by Peter Dunn of Historic England transports us back to the fateful Battle of Hastings in 1066. The scene unfolds at Battle Abbey in East Sussex, where the English army, led by King Harold Godwinson, faces the advancing Norman forces under the command of William, the Duke of Normandy and future King William I. The English soldiers, clad in saxon armor and wielding shields and various weapons, gaze intently towards their adversaries. Their expressions reveal a mixture of determination and apprehension as they prepare for the impending clash. The Normans, dressed in their distinctive mail shirts and helmets, stand firm, their shields raised high and weapons at the ready. The battlefield stretches out before them, dotted with the detritus of war - fallen trees, discarded weapons, and the remnants of the once-proud English army. The ominous clouds in the sky add to the sense of foreboding, as the two sides prepare to engage in a battle that would change the course of English history. King Harold, wearing a crown and carrying a large shield emblazoned with a cross, stands at the forefront of the English line, his face a mask of resolve. King William, on horseback, surveys the battlefield, his expression a mix of confidence and determination. This powerful illustration, created by Peter Dunn of the Historic England Graphics Team, offers a glimpse into one of the most significant moments in English history. It serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the men who fought in the Battle of Hastings, and the profound impact their actions had on the future of their country.
