Maltings, Stowmarket MF98_01576_08
The Maltings, Station Road, Stowmarket, Suffolk. Interior view. Malt, the first process in the making of beer, is traditionally made in a floor maltings. The grain, usually barley, is first soaked in water in big tanks or steeps and is then spread out at a depth of about 30cm over the malthouse floors. When it begins to sprout it is transferred to a kiln where it is heated to stop it growing. Once nearly every town and village in England had a traditional malthouse: today fewer than ten are still in use. Photographed by Hallam Ashley in September 1970

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the heart of Stowmarket, Suffolk in 1970. The image showcases the interior view of The Maltings, a significant historical site that played a crucial role in the beer-making process. Malt, which is essential for brewing beer, was traditionally produced in floor maltings like this one. The photograph beautifully captures the essence of this ancient craft. In the picture, we can see big tanks or steeps filled with barley grains soaked in water as they undergo their initial transformation into malt. Spread out at a depth of approximately 30cm over the malthouse floors, these grains are left to sprout before being transferred to a kiln where they are heated to halt further growth. It's fascinating to learn that once upon a time, every town and village across England boasted its own traditional malthouse. However, by 1970 when this photo was taken, only a handful remained operational - making The Maltings in Stowmarket an invaluable piece of history. Hallam Ashley skillfully captured this momentous scene nearly five decades ago. Through his lens and expertise, he has gifted us with an extraordinary glimpse into our brewing heritage. This print serves as both a testament to our past and an inspiration for future generations who continue to appreciate and celebrate these age-old traditions.
