Clifton Suspension Bridge crosses the Avon Gorge. It was designed in 1829-31 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Construction began in 1831 but work was abandoned in 1853. Brunel died in 1859 and as a memorial, a company was formed to complete the bridge. It finally opened on 8 December 1864

This photograph showcases the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge, spanning the Avon Gorge in North Somerset. Designed by the visionary Isambard Kingdom Brunel between 1829 and 31, the bridge's construction began in 1831 but was halted in 1853 due to financial difficulties. A decade later, in Brunel's memory, a company was formed to complete the project, and on 8 December 1864, the bridge was finally opened to the public. The bridge's suspension design, a marvel of engineering at the time, is evident in this image, with its elegant arches and intricate suspension cables. The toll booth, a necessary feature for the maintenance of the bridge, stands proudly on the bridge's northern approach.
