EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, OP14727 from the Historic England Archive, captures the Medieval heart of Coventry as it looked around 1880. The image, taken by renowned Victorian photographer Francis Bedford, focuses on Butcher Row, a historic street once teeming with life and commerce. The scene is set by the half-timbered buildings, their intricate facades adorned with carved wooden beams and ornate brickwork. The cobblestone street, worn smooth by centuries of use, is lined with furniture displayed on the pavement, adding to the bustling atmosphere. Palmer & Co, Brokers and Furniture Dealers, is prominently featured in the photograph. Their premises, with its large, ornate sign, exudes an air of prosperity and success. The furniture, a mix of intricately carved wooden pieces and elegant metalwork, is arranged invitingly on the pavement, beckoning potential customers. Butcher Row, with its rich history and vibrant commercial activity, was a testament to Coventry's rich past. However, this idyllic scene was not to last. By the 1930s, the street layout had become outdated, and Butcher Row was demolished to make way for a new street design that would better accommodate the motor car. Today, this photograph stands as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, a time when the heart of Coventry was defined by its Medieval architecture and the bustling commerce of its streets.
