EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Hercules fights with Geryoneus" we are transported back to ancient times, witnessing a fierce battle between the mighty Hercules and the formidable Geryoneus. The print, created by renowned artists Hendrick Goltzius, Francesco Primaticcio, and Servatius Rosenbleck between 1575 and 1579, beautifully captures the intensity of this legendary clash. As our eyes delve into the scene, we see Hercules standing tall amidst a chaotic backdrop. His muscular frame exudes power as he wields his weapon against Geryoneus' monstrous heads and bodies strewn across the battlefield. The fallen herdsman Eurytion lies lifeless nearby while Orthrus, a fearsome dog-like creature guarding Geryon's herd, also meets its demise at Hercules' hands. The composition of this artwork is strikingly dramatic; silhouettes of maritime elements such as ships and vessels add depth to the image. We can almost hear the sounds of clashing swords and cries of soldiers aided by Hercules in their valiant fight against this bulky giant. This extraordinary piece is inspired by a six-line Latin poem that recounts how Hercules bravely attacked Geryoneus according to Tib Bartsch Hol's writings. Through their masterful craftsmanship, Goltzius and Rosenbleck have brought these epic verses to life on paper. Quint Lox has skillfully captured every intricate detail in this print from Liszt Collection. It
