EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the artwork titled "St Jerome Wilderness" a mid-16th-century woodcut attributed to Nicolò Boldrini, an Italian artist from Vicenza. Measuring 15 1/4 by 21 5/16 inches (388 by 541 cm), this print exemplifies the new expressive medium of printmaking that emerged during this period. The subject of this woodcut is Saint Jerome, one of the favorite themes in Venetian art during the fifteenth century. The piece beautifully illustrates Titian's involvement in printmaking as a means of reproducing his drawings and expanding his artistic reach. The intricate details and delicate lines captured in this woodcut highlight the skill and craftsmanship of Giovanni Britto, a German artist active in Venice between 1536 and 1550. It is believed that Britto created this work after Titian's original painting, paying homage to Tiziano Vecellio, who was born in Pieve di Cadore around 1485-1490. Through its rich symbolism and serene composition, "St Jerome Wilderness" transports viewers into a contemplative atmosphere. This remarkable artwork serves as a testament to both the talent of its creators and their dedication to pushing artistic boundaries through innovative techniques.
