EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Austrian army's modernized tank force during maneuvers in the late 1930s, on the cusp of the Anschluss and the looming shadow of World War II. The Anschluss, or the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, took place on March 12, 1938, and marked the end of Austrian independence. In this image, we see a line of Austrian Panzer I and Panzer II tanks, the second and third generations of the German Panzer I, which were adopted by the Austrian military as part of its modernization efforts in the 1930s. The tanks are seen moving in formation, their tracks kicking up clouds of dust as they advance across the terrain. The Austrian army, which had been disbanded after World War I, was rebuilt under the guidance of German military advisors, and these tanks were a testament to the country's military resurgence. The tanks in this photograph were likely being put through their paces during routine training exercises, but the ominous clouds on the horizon foreshadow the dark events that were to come. The Anschluss marked the beginning of Austria's involvement in the war, and these tanks would soon be pressed into service against the Allies. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in Austrian and European history, when the promise of peace and prosperity gave way to the harsh realities of war. It also serves as a testament to the military might of the Austrian army in the years leading up to the Anschluss, a time when the country was striving to reclaim its place on the world stage.
