EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Avro Vulcan B1 XA894, a significant figure in the annals of aviation history, as it undergoes ground engine testing at Farnborough in 1962. The Avro Vulcan B1 was a groundbreaking British bomber aircraft, renowned for its distinctive delta wing design and impressive speed. However, this particular aircraft holds a unique place in aviation history as it served as a testbed for the revolutionary Bristol Siddeley Olympus 22R turbojet engine. The Olympus 22R was destined for use in the TSR.2, a twin-engine, variable geometry wing supersonic combat aircraft, which was also under development at the time. The photograph captures a moment of anticipation and progress, as engineers and technicians prepare for another round of testing. Yet, this optimistic scene was to be short-lived. On the 3rd of December 1962, a fire broke out during ground engine testing, ultimately destroying the Avro Vulcan B1 XA894. The cause of the fire remains a subject of debate, but it marked a setback in the development of both the Vulcan and the TSR.2 programs. Despite this unfortunate event, the Avro Vulcan B1 XA894's role as a testbed for the Olympus 22R engine was instrumental in paving the way for future advances in aviation technology. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the risks and rewards inherent in the pursuit of aviation innovation.
