EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the pivotal moment in the Peninsular War's history when Wellington's British and Portuguese forces stormed the heavily defended French fortress of Ciudad Rodrigo on 15 January 1812. The key frontier town, located on the Portugal-Spain border, had been under siege for over a month, with the French army under Marshal Soult putting up fierce resistance. Wellington, determined to secure the strategic position and prevent the French from advancing further into Portugal, ordered his troops to mount a daring assault on the fortress walls. The print depicts the chaotic scene as British soldiers, led by General Rowland Hill, charge towards the breach in the fortifications, with the sound of cannon fire and musket shots ringing in the air. The French defenders, caught off guard by the sudden attack, are shown retreating in disarray. The print also highlights the bravery and determination of the British soldiers, many of whom had already endured long campaigns against the French in Spain and Portugal. The successful capture of Ciudad Rodrigo was a significant victory for Wellington's forces and boosted morale, both in Portugal and in Britain. It also marked the beginning of the French retreat from the Iberian Peninsula, which would ultimately lead to the final defeat of Napoleon's army at the Battle of Vitoria later that year. This historic print offers a glimpse into the intense and decisive moments of the Peninsular War, a conflict that played a crucial role in shaping European history.
