EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Alexandrine Augusta of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1879-1952), the graceful and elegant Queen Consort of Denmark and Iceland, in circa 1906. Born a Grand Duchess in the German duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Alexandrine was the daughter of Grand Duke Frederick Francis II and Grand Duchess Anna of Russia. In 1898, she married the future King Christian X of Denmark, who ascended to the throne in 1912. Alexandrine's stunning appearance is accentuated in this image by her elegant attire and the intricate Greek key pattern necklace that adorns her neck. The necklace, a symbol of her royal status, adds an air of sophistication and regality to her appearance. The photograph also showcases Alexandrine's striking features, including her piercing blue eyes and delicate features. During her time as Queen Consort of Denmark, Alexandrine was known for her dedication to her role and her commitment to the Danish people. She was also the Queen Consort of Iceland from 1918 to 1944, during which time she played an important role in the country's transition from a Danish protectorate to an independent nation. Alexandrine's life was marked by both personal and political challenges, including the loss of her eldest son in World War I and the German occupation of Denmark during World War II. Despite these challenges, she remained a steadfast and beloved figure in Danish and Icelandic history. This photograph serves as a reminder of her enduring legacy as a royal figure and a symbol of Scandinavian royalty.
