EDITORS COMMENTS
This hauntingly beautiful and poignant image captures the moment of the Death of Duke Frederick William of Brunswick at the Battle of Quatre Bras on June 16, 1815. The Duke, dressed in full military regalia, lies lifeless on the battlefield, his horse rearing up in shock and grief. Surrounding him are the chaotic scenes of war - the smoke of gunpowder, the cries of wounded soldiers, and the clashing of swords and horses' hooves. Duke Frederick William of Brunswick was a key commander in the allied forces against Napoleon Bonaparte during the Napoleonic Wars. He led his Brunswick Corps bravely at the Battle of Quatre Bras, holding off the French army and buying valuable time for the main allied forces to prepare for the Battle of Waterloo. Tragically, the Duke was struck down during the battle, leaving his troops in mourning and the allied forces in a precarious position. This coloured aquatint, published by J. Lorenz Rugendas, is a contemporary depiction of the event and offers a glimpse into the raw emotions and chaos of the battlefield. The artist remains unknown, but the image is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the Napoleonic Wars and the human cost of war. The Duke's death at Quatre Bras was a turning point in the campaign, and his bravery and leadership were remembered long after the battle was over.
