EDITORS COMMENTS
This vivid and detailed coloured lithograph depicts the pivotal moment of the Battle of Konongo in the First Ashanti War, fought on July 11, 1824, between the British forces under the command of Colonel Charles Sutherland and the Ashantee army. The image, created by the skilled hand of lithographer C. Hullmandel after the painting by Denis Dighton, was published by J. Robins in London in 1825. The scene unfolds with the British troops, dressed in red coats and bearing muskets, charging towards the Ashanti warriors, who are shown in various stages of retreat and engagement. The Ashanti king, Osei Tutu I, is depicted on horseback, attempting to rally his troops. The chaos of battle is captured in the swirling clouds of dust and smoke, the clashing of weapons, and the cries of soldiers and warriors. The First Ashanti War was a significant conflict in the history of the British Empire in Africa, as it marked the beginning of British control over the Gold Coast region, now modern-day Ghana. The war was sparked by the kidnapping of a British diplomat, and the subsequent demand for reparations from the Ashanti king. The defeat of the Ashanti army at Konongo was a turning point in the conflict, leading to the eventual signing of the Treaty of Fomena in 1826, which secured British dominance in the region. This lithograph provides a visual record of a pivotal moment in African and imperial history, offering a glimpse into the tactics, uniforms, and weaponry of the British and Ashanti forces during the early 19th century.
