EDITORS COMMENTS
This silhouette print, titled "History of Wells" by H. L. Oakley, is the second page of a four-page leaflet published by LeGrand Sutcliff & Gell Ltd, esteemed Artesian Well & Hydraulic Engineers of Southall, West London. The image, divided into two distinct scenes, offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of water wells throughout history. The left side of the print depicts a well scene from biblical times. In this serene image, a palm tree stands tall against the backdrop of a Middle Eastern landscape, its fronds casting long shadows over a simple, yet functional well. An Arab man, dressed in traditional garb, is shown drawing water from the well using a bucket, while a camel and its attendant rest nearby. The tranquility of the scene is further emphasized by the presence of a solitary dog watching over the animals. On the right side of the print, we find a primitive well, a stark contrast to the biblical scene. Here, a man laboriously lowers a bucket into the well using a simple rope and pulley system. The scene is set in a barren landscape, with trees few and far between. The absence of any animals or other signs of civilization underscores the isolation and hardship of this early water-gathering method. This silhouette print not only showcases the ingenuity and resourcefulness of mankind in providing for their water needs, but also offers a glimpse into the rich history of water wells and the cultures that have relied upon them throughout the ages.
