EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 11: A Saumpareeah or Snake Catcher Exhibits Snakes Before Europeans (1813) During the Regency era of the early 19th century, European travelers to India were drawn to the exotic and often dangerous aspects of life in the colonies. One such spectacle that captivated their imaginations was the art of snake charming, practiced by local Saumpareeahs or snake catchers. In this image from 1813, a Saumpareeah skillfully exhibits his collection of snakes to a group of European onlookers. Dressed in traditional Indian attire, he holds a long, woven basket, filled with a variety of venomous snakes, including cobras. With a calm and charming demeanor, he plays soothing music on a pipe, mesmerizing the serpents and keeping them under control. The Europeans, dressed in their colonial finery, appear both fascinated and slightly apprehensive as they observe the scene unfold. The British Empire had been expanding its reach in India for decades, and such exotic displays served as reminders of the vast cultural differences between the two worlds. Despite the inherent danger of handling venomous snakes, the Saumpareeah's skill and charisma left the European audience in awe, offering a glimpse into the rich and diverse lifestyle of colonial India.
