EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Jess Willard (1881-1968), also known as the "Pottawatomie Giant," proudly displays the heavyweight boxing championship belt he had just won from Jack Johnson on the fifth of April, 1915. The image captures the elated moment of Willard's victory, which took place in Havana, Cuba. At 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighing over 245 pounds, Willard was a formidable presence in the ring. He had challenged Johnson, the first African American heavyweight champion, for the title in a highly anticipated match. The fight was significant not only for its outcome, but also for the racial tensions that surrounded it. Johnson, who had held the title since 1908, was a controversial figure due to his race and his flamboyant lifestyle. Many Americans, particularly in the South, were opposed to a black man holding the heavyweight championship. Willard, on the other hand, was a popular figure in the white community and was seen as a symbol of white supremacy. The fight drew international attention, with thousands of spectators traveling to Cuba to witness the event. Willard, who was a heavy underdog, shocked the world by knocking out Johnson in the 26th round. The victory made Willard an instant celebrity and solidified his place in boxing history. This photograph captures the moment of triumph for Willard, who stands confidently with the championship belt draped over his shoulders. The image is a testament to the power and drama of the sport of boxing and the cultural significance of the heavyweight championship title.
