EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph taken in April 1939, we see a young King Alfonso XIII of Spain (center) surrounded by his grandchildren and members of the Spanish royal family. King Alfonso XIII, who reigned from 1886 to 1931, was exiled from Spain following the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic. He lived in Rome, Italy, where he was protected by the Italian government. In this image, the King is seen with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. From left to right, we have Don Alfonso (son of Infante Jaime, brother of the King) looking out of the picture, Infante Juan Carlos (son of Infante Juan, who would later become King Juan Carlos I of Spain), Donna Sandra Torlonia (daughter of Infanta Beatriz), Don Marco Torlonia (son of Infanta Beatriz), Infanta Maria del Pilar (daughter of Infante Juan), and Infanta Margarita (daughter of Infante Juan). The King's other grandchildren, who are not present in the photograph, include Infante Jaime, Duke of Segovia, and Infanta Isabel. The photograph provides a rare glimpse into the personal lives of the Spanish royal family during their exile in Italy. It is a poignant reminder of the close-knit relationships that existed within the royal family, despite the political turmoil and upheaval that was taking place in Spain at the time. The image also highlights the importance of the Italian royal family in providing a safe haven for the Spanish royals during their period of exile. This photograph is a valuable historical document that sheds light on an important chapter in Spanish royal history. It is a reminder of the enduring legacy of the Spanish monarchy and the resilience of the Spanish people in the face of adversity. The photograph is a testament to the strength of the bonds that unite families, even in the most challenging of circumstances.
