EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph captures Lady Sheila Chisholm (nee Mackellar), the elegant and captivating daughter of Harry Chisholm of Sydney, NSW, Australia, as she tenderly cradles her newborn son, Anthony Hugh Francis Harry St. Clair-Erskine, in the year 1917. At the time, Lady Sheila was married to Lord Loughborough, Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, the eldest son of the fifth Earl of Rosslyn. Serving in the Kings Royal Rifles during World War I, Loughborough's drinking and gambling habits led to marital strife, resulting in their divorce in 1926. Amidst the tumultuous marriage, Lady Sheila was linked romantically with Albert, Duke of York, the future King George VI, in 1920, while she was still married to Loughborough. Following her divorce, she married Sir John Millbanke, the eleventh baronet, in 1928, and later, Prince Dimitri Romanoff of Russia in 1954. The serene image of Lady Sheila and her cherished son, Anthony, stands as a testament to the love and tenderness that exists between a mother and her child. This exquisite portrait, reminiscent of a bygone era, showcases the grace and elegance of a lady of the aristocracy during the early 20th century.
