EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Atlantic horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, also known as the Atlantic immortal or the living fossil. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The Atlantic horseshoe crab is a unique marine arthropod, with a distinctive horseshoe-shaped body and ten appendages. It is not a true crab, but rather a member of the order Xiphosura. The crab's long, pointed tail is used for propulsion in the water, while its many legs help it to move along the sandy bottom. The horseshoe crab is an important species in marine ecosystems, particularly as a food source for migratory shorebirds. Its blue, copper-based blood is also used in biomedical research, as it contains a compound that helps detect bacterial contamination in medical equipment and pharmaceuticals. This intricately detailed engraving shows the horseshoe crab in its natural habitat, surrounded by various marine organisms, including a tadpole and a shrimp-like creature, possibly a Triops or a Lepidurus species. The apo and cancriformis stages of the horseshoe crab's life cycle are also depicted, highlighting its unique reproductive process. Overall, this beautiful illustration showcases the natural history of the Atlantic horseshoe crab and the exceptional skill of the artists and publishers involved in its creation.
