EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving, titled "Bearded Seal, Erignathus barbatus (Great Bearded Seal, Phoca barbata)" is an exquisite example of naturalistic illustration from the 19th century. The image, created by James Stewart and engraved by W.H. Lizars, is taken from Robert Hamilton's seminal work "Amphibious Carnivora," published as part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Mammalia, in Edinburgh in 1839. The Bearded Seal, also known as the Great Bearded Seal or Phoca barbata, is a large species of true seal found primarily in the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans. This majestic creature is depicted in the engraving with its distinctive long whiskers, or "beards," which can grow up to 1 meter long. The seal's body is covered in thick fur, which helps to insulate it in the cold waters of its habitat. The image captures the seal in its natural environment, with its powerful square flippers spread out in the water. A young pup can be seen in the foreground, lying on the ice, providing a sense of scale to the adult animal. The intricate details of the seal's fur, skin, and whiskers are beautifully rendered, showcasing the skill of both the illustrator and the engraver. The engraving is a testament to the scientific curiosity and artistic talent of the time, providing a detailed and accurate record of this fascinating Arctic species. It is a reminder of the importance of natural history illustration in documenting and preserving the natural world for future generations.
