EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from the new edition of Dru Drurys Illustrations of Exotic Entomology published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases an intriguing assemblage of exotic butterflies and a guineafowl. The central focus of the image is the Fashion Commodore butterfly, Junonia pelarga, displayed both dorsal side (upper) and ventral side (lower). The upper side boasts a vibrant orange and black pattern, while the under side is adorned with a more subdued brown and white design. Surrounding the Fashion Commodore butterfly are other captivating species. The Guineafowl butterfly, Hamanumida daedalus, can be seen in the top left corner, its wings adorned with intricate patterns of brown, orange, and black. Two Small Flame-bordered Charaxes, Charaxes anticlea, are depicted in the bottom left and right corners, their wings displaying striking orange and black borders with black spots. The Guineafowl, Meleagris guinea, is depicted in the lower right corner, adding a touch of natural history to the otherwise purely entomological illustration. The Guineafowl, a native of Africa, is known for its distinctive plumage and distinctive call. This exquisite lithograph, handcoloured by skilled artists, offers a glimpse into the natural world of the early 19th century, showcasing the intricate beauty and diversity of exotic butterflies and other creatures. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colours make this a truly captivating piece of natural history art.
