This handcoloured lithograph depicts Indian Sarsaparilla, also known as Nunnari or Nannari, as illustrated by David Blair for Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" published in London in 1880. The botanical name of this plant is Hemidesmus indicus. Indian Sarsaparilla is a creeping herbaceous vine native to the Indian subcontinent, growing in wet forests and marshes. The plant is characterized by its long, twining stems and fleshy, tuberous roots. The roots were traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for various ailments, including rheumatism, gonorrhea, and syphilis. The lithograph shows the root of the plant in great detail, highlighting its distinctive features. The surface of the root is covered in small, raised bumps, and the cross-section reveals a white, spongy interior. The root is also shown with several small, white rhizomes emerging from it. The use of Indian Sarsaparilla in traditional medicine can be traced back to ancient Indian texts, such as the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita. It was believed to have cooling, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties. The plant was also used as a tonic and aphrodisiac.
