EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Rene Primevere for the supplementary lessons of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon's renowned natural history work, showcases two striking Australian birds: the Long-billed Corella (Cacatua tenuirostris) and the Galah, also known as the Rose-breasted Cockatoo (Eolophus roseicapilla). The Long-billed Corella, with its elegant, slender beak, is a medium-sized white cockatoo native to arid regions of inland Australia. They are social birds, often found in large flocks, and feed primarily on seeds and fruits. The Long-billed Corella's plumage is pure white, with a black tip on the bill and a red eye. The Galah, on the other hand, is a larger, pink and grey cockatoo, native to a wide range of habitats across eastern and central Australia. They are also social birds and are often seen in flocks, feeding on seeds, fruits, and occasionally, blossoms. The Galah's distinctive rosy-pink coloration is most prominent on the underparts, while the wings and tail are grey. The face is bare, revealing pink skin. This beautiful illustration, produced in Paris in 1838 by Pourrat Freres, highlights the intricate details and vibrant colors of these two iconic Australian birds. The meticulous hand-coloring brings the image to life, showcasing the unique features of each species. The engraving is a testament to the skill and artistry of the time, providing a window into the natural world and the scientific curiosity that drove the study and documentation of zoology, natural history, and ornithology during the 19th century.
