EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage photograph, a North American T-28B Trojan with the identification number 137680, operated by the United States Marine Corps, is seen taxing at Guide de la Ville Airport on January 12, 1969. This T-28B, with the manufacturer's serial number 200-43, was based at Marine Corps Air Station Quantico. Later in its career, this aircraft underwent conversion to the T-28D-10 variant and was transferred to the Royal Thai Air Force, where it was given the designation B.JF13-110/15. Tragically, on October 16, 1972, this T-28D crashed into the Gulf of Pak Phanong, located in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand. The circumstances surrounding the accident are not detailed in the available information. The North American T-28 Trojan is a two-seat, single-engine, advanced trainer aircraft, which first flew in 1949. It was widely used by the United States military and several other air forces around the world for pilot training, as well as for counter-insurgency and close air support missions. The T-28's versatility, durability, and relatively low operating costs made it a popular choice for various applications. This photograph captures a moment in time when the T-28B Trojan 137680 was still in the service of the United States Marine Corps, before its eventual transfer and tragic end in Thailand. The image offers a glimpse into the rich history of military aviation and the global reach of American military aircraft during the Cold War era.
