This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Limnadia d'Hermann, Brachipodi. Lofiropi. Branchiopodi," depicts two distinct species of planktonic crustaceans: Limnadia hermani and Branchinecta paludosa. The illustration, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, was published in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Science," in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The first crustacean, Limnadia hermani, is shown at the top left of the image. It is identified by its bulbous eyes, which resemble those of a fish, and its elongated, striped body. The second crustacean, Branchinecta paludosa, is depicted at the bottom right. It is characterized by its fairy-like appearance, with a transparent body and delicate, branching appendages.
