EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Spotted Drum, Equetus punctatus, also known as Eques punctatus or Cavaliere punteggiato, a fascinating marine species from the family Callyspongiidae. The illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy. The intricate details of the Spotted Drum's anatomy are beautifully rendered in this exquisite work of art. The soft coral is shown with its distinctive spotted appearance, displaying the tiny white bumps that give it its name. The image also reveals the various structures that make up the coral, including the man-shaped hand-like projections, or manus, and the paniforme, or fan-shaped, growths. The Spotted Drum is a type of demosponge, which is a class of marine organisms that form the phylum Porifera. These animals are characterized by their porous bodies, which filter water to extract food. The Spotted Drum is a common sight in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, and it plays an essential role in the marine ecosystem as a provider of shelter and food for various marine organisms. The creation of this illustration was a collaborative effort between several skilled individuals. The drawing was made by Jean Gabriel Pretre, while the engraving was executed by Lasinio. The overall direction and supervision were provided by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, a renowned French botanical illustrator of the 19th century. Turpin was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring the natural world to life through his illustrations. This beautiful work of art is a testament to the skill and artistry of these talented individuals and the scientific curiosity of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu.
