EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases the grandeur of the Shwemawdaw Pagoda, also known as Shoemadoo or the Great Temple at Pegue, located in the ancient city of Bago in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). The Stupa, a Buddhist religious monument and a significant pilgrimage site, is depicted in all its glory in this handcoloured copperplate engraving. Drawn and engraved by Andrea Bernieri from Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World, published in Florence, Italy, in 1844, the illustration offers a glimpse into the architectural splendour and cultural significance of this iconic structure. The Shwemawdaw Pagoda, built in the 15th century, is renowned for its height and intricate design. The main stupa is believed to enshrine a strand of Buddha's hair, making it a sacred site for Buddhists. The structure is adorned with numerous ornate spires, glistening golden gilt, and intricate decorative motifs, reflecting the rich history and artistic heritage of Myanmar. Michael Symes, an English diplomat, described his visit to the temple in his Account of an Embassy in the Kingdom of Ava, published in 1801. He wrote, "The temple of Shoemadoo is the most famous in the kingdom, and is said to contain a relic of the Buddha's hair. It is a very large and magnificent structure, and is surrounded by numerous smaller temples and monasteries." This exquisite illustration not only captures the architectural beauty of the Shwemawdaw Pagoda but also provides a window into the cultural and historical significance of this remarkable site.
