EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored botanical engraving depicts the Common Vipers Bugloss, Echium vulgare, a vibrant and eye-catching plant native to Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean. The Common Vipers Bugloss is a member of the figwort family (Scrophulariaceae) and is known for its distinctive blue-violet flowers, which bloom in dense, spiky inflorescences. The plant's common name derives from the belief that the bees that pollinate the flowers were thought to be bitten by asps or vipers while doing so, due to the plant's resemblance to the hooded head of a viper. The engraving is taken from Joshua Hamilton's Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal, published in London in 1792 by W. Locke. This edition of Culpeper's herbal was an enlarged version of the original work, which was first published in 1653, and included several hundred additional plants, many of which were contributed by Sir John Hill. The botanical illustrations in this edition were produced using the copperplate engraving technique, which involved creating a design on a copper plate, etching the design into the plate, and then inking and printing the image onto paper. The handcoloring of the print adds an additional layer of detail and beauty to the already intricate engraving. The Common Vipers Bugloss has a long history of medicinal use, with Culpeper himself noting its use as a remedy for various ailments, including snakebites, wounds, and inflammation. The plant's sticky nectar was also believed to be effective in drawing out poison from wounds. Today, the Common Vipers Bugloss is cultivated as an ornamental plant and is a popular addition to gardens in its native regions and beyond.
