EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph features a letter written in Swedish, discovered among the personal effects recovered from the body of Carl Asplund following the tragic sinking of RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912. The letter, now part of the Lillian Asplund Collection, bears the faded ink of an old Swedish song, its words a poignant reminder of the hope and longing that once filled the heart of this unfortunate soul. Carl Asplund, a Swedish immigrant, was traveling aboard the ill-fated White Star liner with his wife Lillian and their young son Oscar. The family had embarked on their journey to America in search of a better life, their dreams of a new beginning shattered when the Titanic struck an iceberg and began to sink. The letter, penned in the final hours of the ship, speaks of love and loss, and the bittersweet promise of a reunion in the afterlife. The words of the old Swedish song, "O Gud, vad jag önskar jag var i himlen," or "Oh God, how I long to be in heaven," resonate with the deep sorrow and hope that must have filled Carl's heart as he faced the inevitable. Tragically, Carl did not survive the disaster, his body recovered days later by the rescue teams. The letter, a poignant reminder of the human stories behind the Titanic tragedy, now rests among the historic artifacts of the Lillian Asplund Collection, a testament to the enduring power of love and the indelible mark left by the RMS Titanic on history.
