EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Queen Suriya of Afghanistan, the elegant and enigmatic wife of King Amanullah Khan, during their official visit to London in March 1928. The image, taken in the heart of the 1920s, showcases Queen Suriya's regal beauty and sophisticated style. Born in Kabul in 1901, Suriya was the daughter of Mirza Mohammad Khan, a prominent Afghan politician. She married King Amanullah Khan in 1919, at the age of 18, marking the beginning of a new era in Afghan history. King Amanullah was a modernizing ruler who sought to bring his country into the modern world, and Queen Suriya was a key figure in his efforts to promote a more Westernized image for Afghanistan. In this photograph, Queen Suriya is seen wearing an impressive array of diamonds and other jewels. Her tiara, adorned with intricate designs and large diamonds, sits atop her dark, curled hair. Her neckline is adorned with a long, elegant necklace, and her ears are adorned with large diamond earrings. The diamonds, a symbol of her royal status, glint in the light, adding to her regal presence. The visit to London was an important moment in Afghan history, as it marked the first time an Afghan monarch had visited Europe. The couple was welcomed with great fanfare, and Queen Suriya was particularly admired for her grace and style. This photograph captures a moment in time, a glimpse into the life of a queen and her husband, and the rich history of a country on the cusp of change.
